What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain system that features smart contract functionality. It is the second-largest cryptocurrency platform by market capitalization, after Bitcoin.
Key Concepts
- Blockchain: A distributed ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers.
- Smart Contracts: Self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.
- Ether (ETH): The native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum platform, used to pay for transaction fees and computational services.
- Decentralized Applications (DApps): Applications that run on a decentralized network, leveraging smart contracts.
How Ethereum Works
- Nodes: Computers that participate in the Ethereum network by validating transactions and blocks.
- Mining: The process of validating transactions and creating new blocks, for which miners are rewarded with Ether.
- Gas: A unit that measures the amount of computational effort required to execute operations, such as transactions and smart contracts.
Smart Contracts
- Definition: Programs stored on the blockchain that automatically execute when predetermined conditions are met.
- Languages: Solidity is the most widely used language for writing Ethereum smart contracts.

Ethereum 2.0
- Upgrade: A major upgrade to the Ethereum network aimed at improving scalability, security, and sustainability.
- Proof of Stake (PoS): A consensus mechanism that replaces mining with staking, where validators are chosen to create new blocks based on the amount of Ether they hold and are willing to “stake” as collateral.
- Sharding: A method of splitting the Ethereum network into smaller pieces (shards) to increase transaction throughput.
